"As California's consumer watchdog, we applaud the California State Pipe Trades Council for its record of pro-consumer advocacy." - Richard Holober, Executive Director, Consumer Federation of Cailfornia

Protecting the Health and Safety of all Californians

Current Campaigns

We're working with a large coalition of environmental and consumer groups worried about building material safety, including:

  • Consumer Federation of California
  • California Professional Firefighters
  • Sierra Club California
  • Planning Conservation League
  • Communities for a Better Environment
  • Center for Environmental Health

Governor Schwarzenegger promised Californians he wouldn't be a "typical" politician beholden to special interests. Yet he is putting the interests of toxic plastic pipes manufacturers and wealthy builders ahead of the health and safety of Californians.

Right now, the State Pipe Trades Council is partnering with a broad coalition, including firefighters, the Consumer Federation of California and many of the state's leading environmental organizations to protect Californians and the environment from two dangerous building products: PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) plastic pipe and CPVC (Chlorinated Poly Vinyl Chloride) plastic pipe.

  • PEX Campaign: In November 2004, our coalition won a major victory when the California Court of Appeals ruled that PEX must be tested for health and safety before the Schwarzenegger administration can approve this potentially dangerous product for use in our homes, schools and office buildings. But the fight isn't over yet: The Schwarzenegger administration is defying the law by proposing that PEX be approved with no testing at all. Read more about why PEX is unsafe and how our coalition is working to protect you.
  • CPVC Campaign: Despite evidence that CPVC is a likely carcinogen and may cause birth defects in children, the Schwarzenegger administration is working closely with the manufacturers of CPVC to push its approval for widespread use. Read more about why CPVC is unsafe and how our coalition is working to protect you.
